През този месец си отидоха трима големи европейски учени, най-предани изследователи на класическата гръцка философия, преводачи и интерпретатори на Платон и Аристотел, най-уважавани университетски преподаватели.

Томас Калво Мартинес – доайенът на испаноезичната школа в изследването на античната философия, човекът, направил най-новите преводи на Метафизика и За душата на Аристотел на испански език, един от президентите с тригодишен мандат на Международното Платоново общество, организатор на Четвъртия симпозиум в Гранада, посветен на Тимей и Критий, проведен през 1995 г.

Холгер Теслеф – доайенът на скандинавското платонознание, един от неколцината бащи-основатели, от ентусиастите, които през 1986 година решават да основат Международното Платоново общество, което да провежда веднъж на три години световни симпозиуми, посветени на някой от диалозите. Решеното от бащите-основатели се оказва жизнено и устойчиво. Международното Платоново общество обединява стотици учени от целия свят, в симпозиумите участват стотици колеги с доклади, а всяка година се прави и по възможност най-пълна библиография на книгите и статиите, посветени на Платон и написани на всички световни езици. Холгер Теслеф беше не само един от двигателите на тази най-голяма световна общност на античниците, но и се застъпваше за това в нея да има няколко официални езици, а също така във Финландия и Швеция е подпомагал и насърчавал превеждането и публикуването на книги на античните мислители на шведски и на фински.

It is with great sadness and difficulty that we must announce to our members the passing of our beloved former IPS President, Prof.Tomás Calvo Martínez. He passed away on 1st October, in the company of his son Néstor and members of his family. A dear friend and excellent colleague, he has been our mentor and a supportive, vibrant member of academia. Naturally generous and sympathetic, he has contributed to our Society in many fruitful ways. Prof. Tomás Calvo has contributed to putting Spain on the map of countries that carry out serious and fruitful research in the field of the history of ancient philosophy. He became President of the International Plato Society in the period 1992-1995, as organiser of the IV International Plato Symposium in Granada, bringing together the best specialists in the world in the study and interpretation of the dialogues Timaeus and Critias and creating an atmosphere of work and friendship that has borne important fruit in successive international symposia. Prof. Tomás Calvo has also been co-founder and President of the Iberian Society of Greek Philosophy, from its foundation in 2000 until 2012, and was its Honorary President till 2023. This society has a long history of dialogical encounters with eminent visitors who have significantly enriched our field. In addition to his important and innumerable contributions to the study of pre-Socratic philosophy (since the time of his doctoral thesis) and Plato in particular, passing through scepticism, Epicurus, Stoicism, and Neoplatonism, his work as an interpreter and translator of Aristotle is widely recognised by both national and international researcher. His generous and stimulating company illuminated his intellectual honesty, hard work, transparency, and love for the truth. His heritage will be kept alive in our memory.

Holger Thesleff
1924–2023
On October 6th we heard the sad news from Helsinki that our esteemed colleague Holger Thesleff passed away on October 3rd. According to his son, who was present, he did so “peacefully and without pain.” He had not been his usual self since an illness last year, even though he had been amazingly active well into his nineties. Among his best known works were two early studies of the Pythagorean corpus of the Hellenistic era (1961, 1965); and three monographs on Plato: Studies in the Styles of Plato (1967), Studies in Platonic Chronology (1982) and Studies in Plato’s Two-Level Model (1999), all conveniently included in Platonic Patterns (2009). He also helped build up a literature on Plato in the Swedish and Finnish languages. He was a regular and valued contributor at the symposia of the International Plato Society. Some months before his death he learned that his final paper, “Afterthoughts on ‘School Accumulation’ in Plato’s Academy,” was about to be published in The Making of the Platonic Corpus, Brill, CAMA 6, which should appear later in 2023.

In memoriam Thomas Alexander Szlezák (1940-2023)

With these heartfelt words the Szlezák family announces the departure of Thomas Alexander Szlezák on 18 October, after a brief but difficult illness. He was not only a co-founder but also an active member of the IPS, both on the Executive Committee and the Editorial Board. His publications include first and foremost his edition and commentary on the Pseudo Archytas über die Kategorien (1972). His Habilitationschrift was on Platon und Aristoteles in der Nuslehre Plotins(1979). Together with K. Gaiser and H.-J. Krämer, he was an eminent representative of the Tübingen School. As a classical philologist he emphasises the analysis of the allusions to the agrapha dogmata in the dialogues themselves (Platon und die Schriftlichkeit der Philosophie. Interpretationen zu den frühen und mittleren Dialogen, Berlin/ New York 1985; Das Bild des Dialektikers in Platons späten Dialogen, Berlin/ New York 2004). In the same vein, but aimed at the general public, he published his Platon lesen (1993), which has been translated into almost twenty languages. In addition to his Platonic studies, he has published two studies on Greek culture (2010) and, specifically, on Homer (2012). Testimony to this broad spectrum of interests are his Aufsätze zur griechischen Literatur und Philosophie (2019). “Ein gelungener Wurf” is undoubtedly his opus magnum, his latest book on Plato (2021), in which he presents the results of his research for the general educated public. Thomas Alexander Szlezák was an important researcher of Plato and Platonism. The IPS will remember him as a gentle member of great merit, who was always committed and consistent in defending his positions in Platonic studies.

От тях тримата най-добре познат и у нас беше проф. Томас Александър Слезак.
Книгата му Да четем Платон в превод на Невена Панова и редактирана от Виолета Герджикова бе издадена от „СОНМ“ през 2002 г.
Той беше гост на нашата колегия през 2005 г., ако не греша,
като изнесе лекции и в Софийския университет, и в НБУ.
Една вечер ни беше на гости и у нас, вкъщи. Поспорихме доста, защото двамата с Николай Гочев сме на по-различно мнение от неговото за това как трябва да се чете Платон.
Негов е 22-ият цялостен превод на Аристотеловата Метафизика на немски език. И тъй като преводът му е вече 22-ри подред, контекстът на всички спорове и версии на превеждането на понятията е ясен, преводът му е дюс, няма обяснителни бележки и коментари.

Познавах и тримата лично.
С проф. Холгер Теслеф се запознахме в Бристол през август 1992 г. по време на Третия симпозиум, посветен на Държавникът. Той е един от архиначинателите и основателите на Международното Платоново общество. В неговите ръце за първи път видях що е то преносим компютър, лаптоп, чудо на чудесата по онова време. Той беше един от комисията, подбирала и подреждала докладите на Третия симпозиум и понеже познаваше всички тях, месеци преди да бъдат изнесени на самия форум, накрая направи обзорен пленарен доклад за тенденциите, които се очертават в световното платонознание.
Неговият обзорен доклад бе преведен на български и е публикуван в сп. Философски преглед, 1993/бр. 1-2, с. 157-165. Всеки, който го прочете, ще се убеди колко далновидни и прозорливи са били предвижданията му за развитието на платонознанието в света.

С проф. Томас Калво Мартинес се запознахме по време на Световния Аристотелов конгрес в Солун през май 2016 г. Поговорихме малко.
Снимката е направена от Николай Гочев. По време на този разговор проф. Томас Калво беше възхитен от това, че в подготвяния първи цялостен превод на Метафизика на български преводачът Николай Гочев ще остави навсякъде ентелехия непреведена, а само транслитерирана. Каза, че това е най-голямото нововъведение в неговите преводи на Метафизика и на За душата.
